Ultimate musician
Publisher: Omnibus Press, 346 pagesIN the 12 years between 1993s monster hit, The Red Shoes , and 2005s instant classic, Aerial , Kate Bush, arguably one of rock musics more enigmatic artistes, vanished from the music scene. And after Aerial , she promptly disappeared again, not giving any indication of what she had been up to, what she was going to do, or when or even if the next album would materialise.
Herein lies the problem music journalists and biographers face: Bush was never and still isnt an in-your-face media whore who needs the spotlight in order to make it through the day. She is, simply, an artiste whose aim is to create sonically ambitious and timeless musical compositions. Even promotion efforts for the long-awaited Aerial were minimal only a handful of interviews given and one single released allowing the work to speak for itself.
In his tome, Under The Ivy: The Life And Music Of Kate Bush , biographer Graeme Thomson eschews the trashy tabloid approach of getting the subjects inner circle to dish the dirt; instead, he presents a refreshingly honest account of an unusual musician.
Bushs story starts in 1958 in the English county of Kent, in a sprawling farmhouse where Bushs parents, Dr Robert John Bush and Hannah Daly, first set up home with their two sons, John Carder and Paddy.
When Thomson gets into Bushs own history, however, he doesnt give us much beyond what the notoriously private singer has shared with the media over the course of her career: she smoked her first cigarette at age nine; she was greatly influenced by the records her brothers were playing in the 1960s; she started composing songs in her early teens; and that her most famous song, Wuthering Heights , was not wholly based on the Emily Bronte novel as most believe but rather on the film version starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberone.
What Thomson does reveal is the business side of the Bushes, which has rarely been seen, if at all. The turnover of business managers in the early stages of her career was astounding and, in the end, all were let go and her parents and brothers began looking after Bushs career.
The topics that Thomson delves into with great detail are the creation of Bushs music and visual components. Some of the video directors Bush chose to work with notably Keith MacMillan who helmed the promotional videos for her early singles recall her as an early pioneer, a creative genius.
