Examples of unfunded or underfunded mandates include, but are not limited to: an extended school year, new high school graduation requirements, special education, new staff evaluation requirements and bus inspections. Many unfunded mandates do not originate in Lansing but rather, Washington. Unfunded federal mandates amounted to only 27 in the 1950s and grew to more than 100 in the 1980s. According to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, today we have more than 400 federal mandates that tie up resources and dictate policy to states. They all require states to provide services without helping them meet expenses.
