Up Your Alley: Packin' 10 'rolls' to title
The High Rollers league at Castle Lanes has crowned a new champion for 2011.
Packin' 10, of Turlock, took the top prize of $5,000 last Friday night. What really makes this win special is that they were bowling with only four bowlers. Their leadoff, Lynn Sanders, is in a Turlock area hospital after having major surgery.
In their first match, they took on Toyotech, which decimated the competition the Friday before. Not this time, as Packin' 10 edged them out, 1,027-1,019, overcoming a superior effort from Toyotech's Larry Valenti Jr. Valenti rolled a 279. Packin' 10 bumped off Castle Lanes by 132 pins in its next match. In the championship, they bowled Name Pending, the team that led the league most of the season. In a close match, Packin' 10 took the win, 953-926. Team members are: Sanders, Michael Olesen, Tony Machado III, Scott Grant and brother Todd Grant. Second place received $3,500, third $2,500.
The annual meeting of our Merced County USBC Association is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Bellevue Bowl. Four new directors will be elected during the meeting. Men and women are urged to join the board. The board meets one Saturday a month and works four tournaments during the year. If you have any questions for the board, now is the time to attend this meeting.
I received an update from the sixth annual Open Championships being held in Fresno. It lists Chris Pugliese of Los Banos in fourth place in the handicap singles with a 785. During his event, he rolled a third game of 298 for a scratch set of 752. In handicap doubles, Mike Gomes and Mike Coe, both of Merced, are sitting in third. Gomes and Coe turned in a 1,463. In the handicap all-events, Coe is in third with 2,202. Don Sweet is taking a team to the Open this weekend.
News from the San Joaquin Bowling Club is that its Last Chance tournament in Fresno saw Cam Clemens win first-place money of $320 and Jess Ramirez $220 for second. The club's next event -- the Tournament of Champions -- is set for this weekend at Rodeo Lanes in Clovis. First place nets the winner $2,000, while runner-up still cashes in $1,000. Entry fee is $100.
Don't forget the pro-am tournament at Black Oak Lanes on Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It is a handicap no-tap tourney and you will be bowling with three different pros. The lanes are offering two packages for bowlers. Entry forms are available at Bellevue Bowl. The Battle at Black Oak Casino Open, a PBA West region tournament, runs Saturday and Sunday.
