Better Business Bureau President Tom Bartholomy said his office gets calls about similar scams all the time, and that many people just don't want to hear the truth.

“They would call us and argue with us, saying, ‘I have no risk here.’ We would say, ‘You have $3,500 of risk,’” Bartholomy said. “Whatever money order you are sending away, that's your risk.”

A man named Dr. Franklin Moore replied, supposedly from Hawaii. He said Wickersham could have two puppies for free, as long as he promised to care for and love the “babies,” as he called them.

The next day Wickersham got an email claiming to be from a pet delivery service, asking him to wire a $360 shipping fee to a city in Cameroon.
